about

I wanted this song to be short and quick, like a punk rock song. It has a very obvious hook, but I didn't want it to have a chorus, per se. It needed to feel like a poetry reading, as if you were recalling a moment. You stared at a love-interest as they took a puff off a cigarette on an autumn morning, awkwardly breaking the silence by spilling your guts about your feelings of rejection. Aurelia wrote the piano outro on the spot and it was a beautiful segue into 'Moving Day'. --J

lyrics

Take one last drag and heave a sigh
Pull it past your lips, let it die
The smoke bleeds dry into the autumn chill
An empty morning with time to kill
I can't stay home, but can't sit still
You don't care now; you never will

And I'm left with so many questions
What I am supposed to do?
I'm such a coward when it comes to you
I fear rejection, and I'm scared of truth
I'm scared of the truth

Will you throw me away? (This thrill's not so cheap)
I'm your favorite relapse (Not something you keep)
Like that cigarette ash (Dropped into the street)
And I'm no one again by the end of the week.
